During 1990 state assembly elections, Congress candidate Anees Ahmed lost to Janata Dal candidate Yashwant Bajirao by just six votes from
the then Nagpur central constituency. Political experts then said Ahmed was unfortunate as his family members could not vote for him because stayed in Chhaoni that was part of Nagpur west constituency.
This time Ahmed can rest a bit easy. He is contesting from Nagpur west and for the first time he and his family members can vote for him as they live in same constituency. However, there are many other candidates facing the problem that Ahmed faced then. They or their family cannot cast their vote for themselves as they reside in a constituency not their own.
For the first time, two term MLA from Nagpur west Devendra Fadnavis will not vote for himself as he is contesting from Nagpur south-west while he lives at Trikoni Park, Dharampeth, which is in Nagpur west. Likewise, the former minister and five-time MLA from Nagpur east Satish Chaturvedi will also not able to cast vote for himself as he is resident of Kotwal Nagar, near Pratap Nagar ring road, which again is part of Nagpur south west.
Similarly, sitting Congress MLA from south Nagpur, Dinanath Padole will not be able to cast vote for himself as he is resident of Ganeshpeth which now comes in Nagpur central constituency. Former Nationalist Congress Party city unit chief and independent candidate from Nagpur south Ashok Dhawad is resident of Balraj Marg at Dhantoli, outside his constituency.
Former NMC standing committee chairman and senior BJP leader Nana Shamkule, chairman of NMC weaker section committee and corporator from Bajrang Nagar Sandip Gavai, and BJP candidate Ashish Deshmukh are contesting from Chandrapur, Umred and Saoner constituencies respectively. All of them are residents of Nagpur city and hence cannot vote for themselves.
Among major candidates and their family members who can vote for themselves are minister of state for home Nitin Raut who lives in Bezonbagh (North), BJP candidate Rajesh Tambe(Gaddigodam), Vikas Kumbhare (Golibar square), Dr Raju Deoghare (Ganjakhet), Ravindra Durugkar (Bhaldarpura) and former NMC standing committee chairman and senior BJP leader Krishna Khopde (Satranjipura).
