Elections to various bodies like management council, senate and student's council of all universities will
now be conducted in one
set of rules and regulations under the Maharashtra Universities Act, 1995.
The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of a panel of registrars of four universities formed by chancellor SC Jamir to bring uniformity in statues governing elections in various universities in Maharashtra, sources said.
The two-day registrars panel meet concluded at Jal P Gimi Hall on the premises of Nagpur University on Friday, where the decision to bring uniformity was unanimously taken by the members. Those who attended the meet were Ram Wagh of Swami Ramanand Teerth University of Nanded, Dipak Mule of Marathwada University, Jayant Deshpande and former registrar CD Deshmukh of Amravati University, and Subhash Belsare of Nagpur University. Deshmukh was special invitee for the meeting.
Sources added that the decision was taken in view of objections raised by losing candidates on the conduct of elections. Many of these candidates even challenged the elections in the court of law.
The proposal to bring uniformity in statutes will be placed before the chancellor for approval and there after before state cabinet for making amendments in the Maharashtra Universities Act, 1995.
The procedure adopted by Nagpur University for conducting free and fair polls for its bodies like senate and management council came under appreciation from other members who proposed to undertake same model in their respective universities.
