The Mira Road police on Saturday arrested three persons on charges of raping a 19-year-old college girl from Bhayander. The victim was
raped first on May 14 by her boyfriend of seven months, Parag Mhatre (20) and his friends.
They shot the entire incident on mobile phone and passed it on to Parag's brother Pankaj Mhatre (22). Parag passed on the MMS clip to his brother Pankaj who along with another friend raped the victim on June 6, by threatening to make the clippings public.
The victim was initially scared to disclose it but mustered the courage and narrated the incident to her family. The family lodged a complaint with the Mira-Road police on Friday night.
Parag, Pankaj and a friend Hiren Patil, all residents of Maljipada in Vasai (east) have been arrested and remanded to police custody till June 29. Four other accused, also residents of Maljipada are at large. The accused aged between 20 and 25 years are students of a Vasai college. The police have seized the MMS clippings from the accused.
Parag had befriended Namrata (name changed) a second year Bachelor of Arts student of a Bhayander college about seven months back. According to sub-divisional police officer Maithili Jha, Parag used to wait outside the college and showed his interest in the victim. He introduced himself as Ritesh Patil and she fell in love with him.
Despite being on summer holidays, Namrata managed to leave her home on May 14 and accompanied Parag to the Sai Pooja hotel in Vasai where she was forced to have sex. Thereafter, Parag's four friends joined him in the hotel room. Namrata was shocked to see the other boys force themselves on her. Even as she screamed for help, Parag stood and filmed the sexual act on his mobile phone. After the gang rape, Parag dropped Namrata to her home on his motorbike. He threatened to make the MMS public if she spoke about the incident.
Namrata continued with her normal life and had no further contact with Parag and the other rapists. On June 6, however, she was shocked to receive a call from Parag's brother Pankaj who threatened her about the MMS and asked her to make it to the same hotel. Afraid that the MMS clipping would be circulated to her college mates, she went to the hotel where she was raped by Pankaj and his friend.
According to Jha, after the second rape, the victim feared that she would continue to be blackmailed into having sex with men and decided to speak up.
She confided in her parents who lodged a complained with the Mira Road police on Friday. The accused have been booked under Section 376 (2)(g) of the Indian Penal Code for gang rape.
Though the victim will undergo medical test, the police will have to depend on the clippings as a lot of time has been lost between the rape and the arrest, said Jha. The police will also question the hotel owners and staffers in connection with the gang rape.
