Pune City schools, colleges to shut for seven days
In an attempt to contain the spread of the H1N1 flu virus, district guardian minister Ajit Pawar on Monday declared that all schools
,
colleges, other educational institutions and private tuition classes in Pune and neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad will remain closed for the next seven days. Cinema halls — both individual and those in multiplexes — and auditoriums will be shut for the next three days.
Pawar also appealed to citizens to avoid public gatherings and meetings. He said eight private hospitals have been roped in for the treatment and quarantining of H1N1 patients. However, by evening, three of these hospitals pleaded their inability to provide treatment to patients, saying they did not have enough space in their hospitals to create isolation ICUs.
Addressing a news conference here, Pawar said one-lakh Tamiflu tablets have been made available for Pune. These will be provided at the 15 H1N1 screening centres started by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and in the eight private hospitals. The tablets will also be made available at rural hospitals in the district.
By Tuesday evening, 10 lakh Tamiflu tablets will be made available for the state, Pawar said. The city as well as the state will not face any shortage of tablets, he assured.
The eight private hospitals that were identified for the treatment and quarantining of H1N1 patients are Sahyadri, Noble, Ruby Hall, KEM, Deenanath Mangeshkar, Bharati Vidyapeeth, Niramay and Lokmanya hospitals. However, Ruby Hall, Bharati Vidyapeeth and Lokmanya hospitals backed out citing lack of space to set up isolation ICUs.
Pawar clarified that patients will have to bear the expenses of their treatment at these private hospitals. However, the government will pay for the swab tests and Tamiflu tablets.
About the closure of schools, Pawar said students are expected to stay at home and not attend private tuitions or go to playgrounds. The PMC will disinfect schools
that reported H1N1 cases. Students at private hostels have been asked not to leave the premises and travel out of the city. Independence Day programmes at educational institutions will be attended only by the administration and teachers, he added.
