NU receives over 380 proposals for new colleges

NAGPUR: Even as the Nagpur University is struggling to ensure proper infrastructure, proper teaching staff in all the 750 affiliated colleges, it apparently has failed to learn from its past mistakes. This is evident from the fact that the University, in its perspective plan, has received a whopping 381 proposals for new colleges in just four days, a source informed.
Interestingly, most of these proposals are for general courses like arts, commerce and science while others are for conducting popular courses like BBA, BCA, and BCCA. These proposals have come in from all the six districts - Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur, Wardha, Gadchiroli and Nagpur falling under the university jurisdiction. And more importantly all the applications are from influential businessmen or politicians.
Sources disclosed that though all the applications would not be forwarded to the state government for approval, majority of them would make way and exert additional burden on the university administration which is already battling with a slew of problems due to mushrooming of new colleges. Out of the existing 750, over 500 colleges don't have regular principals and are poor in teaching staff. Even colleges offering professional courses like engineering and law are plagued by these issues resulting in deteriorating education quality. Despite timely warnings and strictures passed by the high court, the university bosses are in no mood to stop commercialisation of education.
Meanwhile, registrars from all the Maharashtra universities will meet at Pune on November 4 and 5. Subhash Belsare will represent Nagpur University during the meet. In another development, the Board of College and University Development (BCUD) director AD Chaudhari reportedly tendered his resignation over differences over pay scales after sixth pay commission. Sources disclosed that after the new pay commission was implemented, the salary of lecturers and professors had jumped manifold whereas those of university employees increased marginally.
