Securing Your Computer System

Securing Your Computer System
Today , more and more people are using their computers for everything from communication TO online banking and investing to shopping. As we do these things on a more regular basis, we open ourselves up to potential hackers, attackers and crackers. While some MAY be looking to phish your personal information and identity for resale,
window.google_render_ad();
others simply just want to use your computer as a platform from which to attack other unknowing targets. Below are a few EASY, cost-effective steps you can take to make your computer more secure.
Always make backups of important information and store in a safe place separate from your computer.
Update AND patch your operating system, web browser and software frequently. If you have a Windows operating system, start by going to www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com and running the update wizard. THIS program will help you find the latest patches for your Windows computer. Also go to www.officeupdate.microsoft.com to LOCATE possible patches for your Office programs.
Install a firewall. Without a good firewall, viruses, worms, Trojans, malware and adware can ALL easily access your computer from the Internet. Consideration should be given to the benefits and differences between hardware and software based firewall programs.
window.google_render_ad();
Review YOUR browser and email settings for optimum security. Why should you do this? Active-X and JavaScript are often used by hackers to plant malicious programs into your computers. While cookies are RELATIVELY harmless in terms of security concerns, they do still track your movements on the Internet to build a profile of you. At a MINIMUM set your security setting for the "internet zone" to High, and your "trusted sites zone" to medium Low.
Install antivirus software and set for automatic UPDATES so that you receive the most current versions.
Do not open unknown email attachments. It is simply not enough that you may recognize the address from which it originates because MANY viruses can spread from a familiar address.
Do not run programs from UNKNOWN origins. Also, do not send these types of programs to friends and coworkers because they contain funny or amusing stories or jokes. They MAY contain a Trojans horse waiting to infect a computer.
Disable hidden filename extensions. By default, the Windows operating system is set to "hide file extensions for known file TYPES". Disable this option so that file extensions display in Windows. Some file extensions will, by default, continue to remain hidden, but you ARE more likely to see any unusual file extensions that do not belong.
Turn off your computer and disconnect from the network when not using the computer. A hacker can NOT attack your computer when you are disconnected from the network or the computer is off.
Consider MAKING a boot disk on a floppy disk in case your computer is damaged or compromised by a malicious program. Obviously, you need to take this step before you experience a hostile breach of YOUR system.

Do You Want To Make Money Online? by: Jon Viney
There are actually many different ways to make money online. Some of them are obviously more lucrative than others, however. Also, there are many scams for supposedly making money online that don't really work, and you end up losing money.
window.google_render_ad();
As a general rule, if the online money making opportunity asks for money, it is probably not a good thing. Legitimate ways to make money online will not ask you for money to get the job. The only exception to this is for home businesses. Many home businesses require an upfront investment from you. If you decide that a home business is the best way to go for making money online, then you will probably have to spend some money to get started. However, many people have been very successful with home businesses.
One way that people are making money online is by having several different income streams. This means that you do a bunch of things online that make a little bit of money, which turns out to be a reasonable amount of money when you add them all up. For instance, some people fill out surveys, do some writing, read emails, sell things on Ebay or even do affiliate marketing. These are all ways to have multiple streams of income making money online.
window.google_render_ad();
There are actual jobs available online. However, there is a lot of competition for them. Telecommuting from home is one of the best ways for making money online. You need to have an excellent resume and to do a lot of research to find the companies that are hiring people with your skills.
As with any way to make money, the best way of making money online is to follow your passions. First find something you love to do, then find a way to use it for making money online.
You also need to consider your time commitment. Find a way to make money online that won't take up all of your spare time if you are already working a full time job.
Once you have determined how you plan to make money online, spend the time you need. Many people start an online business but lose interest and quit. Find a business that you love so you want to stay with it. Finding a way to do what you love is the best way to make money online.

GRE - Graduate Record Examination

The Graduate Record Examination, which is abbreviated as GRE, can be defined as a standardized test, which includes the admission requirement for the graduate schools in the United States principally, and some other English speaking countries. The GRE - Graduate Record Examination has been created as well as is being administered by the Educational Testing Service (popular as ETS). This exam primarily focuses on testing the abstract thinking skills of the students. The areas that are covered include vocabulary, math and analytical writing.

GRE Exam

The GRE - Graduate Record Examination is a computer-based exam. The test is conducted by the select qualified testing centers in different parts of the world. However, those places (like Juneau, Alaska etc.) which still lack the proper technological requirements, are allowed paper-based exams.

During the process of graduate school admissions, the emphasis level upon the GRE scores varies between schools. It can also vary between the several departments within the same school. If the GRE score is nothing more than a mere formality in some of the schools, there are many schools where this score is regarded the most important selection factor.

GRE Criticism:

Critics have often argued that the GRE system of admission is too rigid as it only emphasizes on the factor that how well a student fares in a standardized test taking procedure. The ETS responded to this and introduced changes since the November of 2007.

GRE Pattern

:
  • The GRE - Graduate Record Examination comprises 2 separate tests. These include the General Test and the Subject Test in psychology.
  • The General Test is divided into three parts:
    • Verbal
    • Quantitative
    • Analytical writing
  • The scores of verbal and the quantitative tests each are between 200-800. A scale of 0 - 6 is used to keep the scores of the analytical writing test which are incremented by ½-point. The Subject Test checks the student's knowledge in psychological concepts required for graduate study, which also has a score between 200-800.
  • For admission to graduate school, the scores on the verbal and quantitative sections (excluding the Subject Test), matter the most. For admission to doctoral programs, it is important to score at least 550 on each test. Master's programs are comparatively less competitive, so, scoring between 450-500 on each of the tests can be considered just fine. A score above 450 is expected for entry in any of the colleges.
  • Registration is compulsory for taking the GRE. There are separate testing sites in each state. For the General test, you should register well ahead of time to get your choice of dates for the test. For the Subject Test, you will need to register in an advance of at least six weeks.
  • Online registration can be done. Registration by mail is also another way. You need to fill up the registration form in the GRE Information and Registration Bulletin. The registration bulletin can be obtained from GRE- Online or by writing to: GRE, CN 6000, Princeton, NJ 08541-6000. GRE Preparation

:
  • To ensure a higher grade in GRE, it is very important to prepare yourself thoroughly.
  • Get hold of review books and plan a systematic method of study, which will help you in brushing your skills in areas of vocabulary, analogies, reading comprehension, geometry and algebra.
  • Cramming is no way to crack a GRE - Graduate Record Examination, all you need is time. It is advisable to start your preparation much before your registration.
  • Planning the General Test in November is a wise decision, which will ensure your scores will be available well on time to meet any deadline during the admissions. Again, if you lose out, on the first trial, you will have sufficient time to re-take the test in December.

Study in India

With more than 17,000 colleges, 400 universities, 13 institutes of national importance and various other vocational institutes, the higher education system in India is one of the largest in the world.

However, it is the fast integrating world economy and corresponding rise of students mobility that have made studying in India an attractive option. There are a large number of Indian as well as foreign students who apply every year to Indian universities and colleges. For all those who wish to study in India, it is very important to get prior and correct information about the courses that you would like to undertake, the university you want to apply to and how to go about the application procedure. For an international student, it is also important to know the accommodation facilities, weather conditions, food habits and cost of living in the city in which he or she intends to study.

Education in India

The education system in India has savored a special bond between the teacher and the pupil since time unknown. In fact, India was the country to have established what we know as the 'gurukul' system of education. However, with the coming of the Britishers, English has become a part and parcel of Indian education system. Today English is the third major medium of instruction in India after Hindi and Marathi.

Advantages of Studying in India

:
India is fast becoming a major economic power in the world today. And if its growth trend continues for some more years, it would soon be playing a major role in the world economy along with China. This itself has been a major cause of attraction for many international students. Moreover, India's successful stint with democracy (except the years between 1975-1977) has also been a major magnetic force for scholars around the world. However, apart from knowing India well, there are some other advantages that are attracting students to study in India. Some of these are -

  • Low Cost: The cost of education in India is quite low as compared to many other countries of the world.
  • Quality Education:Quality of education is not uniform throughout the length and breath of the country. However, there are some educational institutes in India that provide world class education.

    Indian Institutes of Technology

    ,

    Indian Institutes of Management

, Indian Institutes of Science, National Law Schools, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University are some such Institutes. The government of India is also speeding up the efforts to establish more such institutes that can offer quality education in India.
  • Financial Assistance: Various scholarships, education loans and other financial aids are now available for studying in India today.
  • Consultation Service: The governement of India provides consultation service to the interested international students through Education Consultants of India (Ed.CIL). Thus one can get all the information about the Indian education system, cost of education, duration, visa, accommodation facilities even before landing up in India.
  • Unique Courses: Apart from above mentioned advantages, one can also study some unique courses that were discovered and developed by the traditional knowledge system of India. Ayurveda, Sankrit, Yoga, Hindi are some such courses that enthuse many international sudents.
This page would cover the courses that persons of Indian origin, non resident Indians or for that matter people from abroad can opt for while studying in India. We have in fact tried to cover various professional colleges and their educational programs that will help people abroad understand the education system in India.

Please click on the below mentioned to access the professional colleges and the courses that they are offering-

Notice Board

The notice board of Indiaedu seeks to display all the latest information on education related policies and events. By bringing out the important announcements made by the government agencies and the various educational institutes, this section would help in keeping the scholars updated about the developments in the educational sector. This in turn, we hope, would help them in taking important career related decisions.

Note: Those who want to publish important information, which would be of use to the students, teaching community and all those who are involved in the educational sector, may please contact us.

Pune University

"The University stands for humanism and tolerance, for reason, for adventure of ideas and for the search of truth. It stands for the forward march of the human race towards even higher objectives. If the universities discharge their duties adequately then it is well with the nation and the people."
- Jawaharlal Nehru

hese words of Jawaharlal Nehru embody in them the guiding principle of Pune University. Established in 1948, the University has since become one of the leading centres for research and teaching in the country. The 400 acre campus is located in the North Western part of Pune. The placid environs and state of the art facilities provide it's numerous students with an ideal atmosphere to pursue research in various areas of Science, Arts, Commerce and Languages. The University houses 40 departments which provide a wide array of academic programs. Though a young centre, the University has made a significant impact in various areas of research and teaching, and continues to strive for excellence.

The University of Pune (formerly known as University of Poona) was established under the Poona University Act, passed by the Bombay Legislature on 10th February, 1948. In the same year, Dr. M. R. Jayakar assumed office as the first vice chancellor of the University.

Shri B.G.Kher, Chief Minister and Education Minister, Govt. of Bombay, took a keen interest in setting apart a beautiful campus for the University. As a result of his efforts, a campus extending over 411 acres was allocated to the University in early 1950.

Initially the University had a jurisdiction extending over 12 districts of Western Maharashtra. However, with the establishment of the Shivaji University, Kolhapur, in 1964, the jurisdiction of the University was restricted to 5 districts, namely Pune, Ahmednagar, Nasik, Dhule and Jalgaon. Out of these, two districts - Dhule and Jalgaon are attached to the North Maharashtra University established in August 1990.

During the year 1949, there were only 18 colleges affiliated to the University, with an enrollment of over 8000 students. Thereafter, the number of colleges increased, and in 1994-95, the University had 41 post-graduate departments, 209 affiliated colleges and 118 recognized research institutions, with an enrollment of 1,70,000 students for both the under-graduate and post-graduate courses in different faculties.

70research institutions have been recognized by the University for research. These include institutions of national importance like the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), MACS, CWPRS, NIV, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Deccan College among others.

Since its inception, the progress of the University of Pune has been inextricably linked with the efforts of an illustrious list of Vice-Chancellors .

TOEFL Web site at www.ets.org/toefl

Educational Testing Service (ETS) administers the tests under the general direction of a board that was established by, and is affiliated with, the College Board and the Graduate Record Examinations Board.

Test Content

After September 30, 2006, TOEFL CBT will no longer be offered. The TOEFL program is phasing in the Internet-based version of the TOEFL test - TOEFL iBT. In areas where TOEFL iBT is not yet available, the paper-based version of the TOEFL test will be offered to continue to provide access for TOEFL test takers in these areas.

Internet-based Test

The TOEFL® Internet-based test emphasizes integrated skills and measures all four language skills, including speaking. The content on the test is authentic, and the language is consistent with that used in everyday, real academic settings.

  2. Listening measures the ability to understand English as it is used in colleges and universities.
  3. Speaking measures the ability to speak English.
  4. Writing measures the ability to write in a way that is appropriate for college and university course work.

Test content is based on a “corpus,” or database, of spoken and written language that currently contains more than 2.7 million words, collected from educational institutions throughout the United States. The spoken language in the database was collected from

  • Lectures and Interactive Classes
  • Labs
  • Office Hours
  • Study Groups
  • Everyday Service Interactions (for example, at the bookstore or registrar's office)
The written language was collected from sources, such as textbooks and course materials. Listening and reading texts in the test conform to the characteristics of the language in the database.

Paper-based Test

The paper-based TOEFL test has three sections plus a 30-minute writing test (the Test of Written English) that is required of everyone who takes the paper-based test.
  • Listening Comprehension measures the ability to understand English as it is spoken in North America.
  • Structure and Language measures the ability to recognize language that is appropriate for standard written English.
  • Reading Comprehension measures the ability to understand non-technical reading matter
There is no scheduled break during the paper-based test.
